GLOM show update.....
Below is a copy and re-post of an update from Linda Kast regarding why there is no GLOM show this year...... NOTE - she mentions several other goat shows that are options, including our Lowell Youth Open & 4-H Goat Show on June 11th.
Hi all, I just wanted to try to explain why the GLOM show will not be in
2011. My family and I have been involved in putting this show together
for at least the last 25 years, maybe more, and it means a great deal to
me. A whole lot of caring has been put forth to make it MIchigan's
largest show and one with a lot of extra things going on. In the past
two years, Don's health has deteriorated and he is no longer able to
help, not even to attend and both of our daughters have full time jobs,
each has two children and they are not able to help as they use to, than
for the last issue, I have just gotten old and tired and can not take it
mostly on by myself. Even though the show is attended by so many, there
just did not seem to be anyone willing to jump in and take on some of
the responsibility and workload for that weekend, thanks so very much
for those that did bits and pieces though. So with a lot of thought and
so much sadness, I decided to let it go. As that weekend grows closer,
it is such a relief but I will miss it so very much. I hope that
everyone will support the other shows in our state, there will be the
Kent county 4-H open show June 11, the MDGS show June 18 & 19, the State
4-H goat show June 25, the LEGS show that same weekend, June 25 & 26,
the Ingham county show is July 30 and the new Great Lakes Ag Expo Sept
3-5. Enjoy them all! lk

March 12 - Spring Goat Day
Hello All,
Spring Goat Day will be on Saturday, March 12 at MSU-Anthony Hall. A very informative program has been planned for this special day by the chairman, Mike Metzger.
Spring Goat Day is an educational program for producers of all types of goats, including meat, fiber and pygmy goats, as well as all dairy goats. Information is provided for adults and youth on various goat-related topics. the annual meeting of the Michigan Dairy Goat Society will also take place during the noon potluck lunch. The event includes youth contests, a cooking and products contest, and a vendor area of goat-related items and supplies.
Once again, this year the featured speaker will be John White from Ohio. Educational sessions will feature good management practices, with sessions on parasites and kid management, including castration, dehorning and vaccinations. There will be session on environmental issues and cooking with goat products.
Admission is $5 per person, 9 or older, or $15 per family which includes parents and all children under 21-children 9 and under are free. HOWEVER-if you are a paid member by Goat Day, the family consisting of parents and all children under 21 are admitted FREE!!!!
If you are not a member of MDGS, you will be required to pay the $5 or $15 admission OR you can join MDGS there by paying the membership fee of $15. This entitles you to one vote per membership at the annual meeting held that day and also, you will receive 6 issues of the GOAT NEWS, the excellent bi-monthly magazine put out by MDGS and that is partially paid for by your dues. It is filled with many articles pertaining to our goat world and news of coming events, shows, etc. It is well worth the cost of membership. It will also give you information about the ADGA National Convention that MDGS is hosting in Grand Rapids in October.
There will be a short meeting about the convention at the end of the programs on the 12th and all are invited to attend and offer their assistance in the many venues that will be provided at this special event. We want to show that Michigan it not only a great state but that we can provide the attendees with a "GRAND ADVENTURE", the theme of the convention. If you have any questions, give Sarah Sheikh, a co-chair of the convention, a call at 616-636-8305 and she will direct you to the person or persons that can help you find your "niche" in this program.
